Hi, I’m Kyle MacDonald and I’m a Registered Psychotherapist with over 15 years clinical experience helping people change behaviours and manage social anxiety, social phobias and shyness.
I’m trained in both behavioral and psychodynamic therapies, including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and I have a particular interest in helping clients to overcome social anxiety and past traumas.
Every week I write a column for New Zealand’s biggest daily newspaper, the New Zealand Herald, responding to readers questions about mental health and therapy. I’m also a regular expert co-host on Mike King’s long running (and award winning) mental health interview and talk back radio show “The Nutters Club”.
For over two years I was also a regular contributor to the Radio Live show “Sunday Mornings with Mark Sainsbury.” My regular interviews offered helpful advice about how to use the skills of Mindfulness and the research of “positive psychology” to lead a happier and more fulfilling life. To hear some of my past interviews, visit my Resources page.
Over the years I’ve worked in the public health sector and non-governmental agencies in addiction services, community mental health services and specialist psychotherapy treatment programmes. I’m now co-director of my own private psychotherapy service, the Robert Street Clinic.
I’m proud to represent psychotherapists on governmental consultation groups on best practice treatments for sexual abuse and trauma. In this role I’ve been active politically, having had an online petition which I organised in protest to changes to funding for sexual abuse treatment presented in Parliament in 2009. My experience in treating social anxiety along with an intense interest in social media to reach people online, has drawn me to develop an online-based therapy treatment approach for people from all around the world struggling with social anxiety, social phobia and shyness.
